Merrill Lynch shares fell $1.73, or 2.6 percent, to $65.69 after O'Neal's announced departure. Some corporate earnings reports disappointed investors. Despite a 14 percent rise in fiscal first quarter profit, P&G fell $2.85, or 4 percent, to $68.98. And although Qwest reported a third-quarter profit jump, its shares tumbled 73 cents, or 8.9 percent, to $7.45 as overall revenue dipped, and after the telecommunications company provided few details about its outlook. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about 3 to 2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 244.9 million shares. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 2.41, or 0.29 percent, to 819.31.

Mayor nabs alleged burglar with bare hands
OGDEN, Utah, Oct. 24 The mayor of Ogden, Utah, is clearly not one to be trifled with if his capture of a suspected burglar on Wednesday is any indication. Ogden Mayor Matthew Godfrey told the Deseret Morning News that when he heard a noise just outside his house early in the morning, he immediately leaped into action and eventually captured a suspect with his bare hands. "We heard somebody trying to come in our side door, so I jumped out of bed and tried to see who it was," Godfrey said. "Then I heard somebody at the back door." After checking on his family members, the mayor allegedly saw someone leaving his shed with one of his family's bicycles and reacted. "I just ran right the side doors and he was heading across the front lawn riding a bike of ours," he said.
Sumter County needs more foster homes
When the state snatches a child from a Sumter County home, chances are good that the kid is going for a long ride. That's because, despite a population of nearly 70,000 people, Sumter County has only two foster homes for practical purposes. And those -- I'm sure you'll be shocked to learn this -- stay full. (Sumter actually has six foster homes, but four are filled with kids that the foster parents intend to adopt, so they either can't or don't wish to take more children.) .
I'll fight to save Union from SNP, says Brown
My forecast for said bubble to burst will occurr very soon into the New Year when the 32 Scottish Coucils become more fully aware of the "now you see it now you don't" SNP, budgetry con. that has been forced upon them, never mind that John Swinney stated in Holyrood he had signed an agreement with all the 33 councils, a bit of paper which had about as much relevance as the one Chamberlain flourished when returning from Germany declaring "peace in our time"To meet the targets, councils will have to slash and put on a back burner many of their plans, to say nothing of drastically reducing current basic services.Happy New Year- Lang May Y'er Lum's Reek in 2008. .

South River suffers second power outage
SOUTH RIVER — The second power outage in as many days left borough residents without heat and electricity for about two hours on a frigid Sunday night. The borough lost electricity around 6 p.m., leaving residents and businesses to cope with the cold conditions until power was restored in most of the municipality just before 7:50 p.m.; there were scattered reports of individual power outages even after that time. Mayor Raymond Eppinger said the problem occurred about a mile away from the borough's electrical substation at the line that feeds the South River utility with raw electricity from PSE&G. An undetermined malfunction occurred on the line and caused the entire system to shut off as a safety precaution. The blackout was the second in less than 36 hours for South River, which operates its own electrical utility; the borough went dark on Saturday around 9:30 a.m.
Obesity Wake-up Call: Changing Course (3 of 4)
"We're on a buddy system," says Heather Curry. When she decided to ditch the random diets and make a lifestyle change, her husband proved more than supportive. "He told me I'll be there for you I'll do whatever I can, and he most certainly has." A photo shows Heather and her husband in the fall of 2006, just a few months before she joined Memorial's Weight Management program. Less than a year later, you can see both making progress. "We went from having one bicycle to now we have 5 bicycles, instead of going out to eat and traveling there now we travel to go out on our bikes. We'll travel 2 hours to go ride 50 miles," says Heather. Victoria Bordelon says she "married a boy who likes to rock climb and cycles, so I started doing the cycling a few years ago." Her husband also serves as a motivating factor.
