Raining all over the WASL

Steve Smith reports three subscription cancellations over Doug Clark's send-up of "My Way" a la Mayor West. Other feedback, particularly from those who listened to the audio version, has been more positive. Does Doug the singer get more latitude than Doug the writer?

A more serious note on the same subject - how do we provide people with information on how to sign the recall petitions without appearing to be promoting the recall itself? We can't get involved in a political campaign, but we also have an obligation to assist citizens with their civic duties. The recall effort differs from other initiative campaigns because it is a grassroots effort exclusive to our city (for instance, we regularly publish contact/location information for the group seeking to disincorporate Spokane Valley).

Pietrus: 'Trade me, trade me ... I want to be moved'

Pietrus has been anticipating a deal for several months. First, he hoped to find a sign-and-trade accord over the summer. When that didn't materialize, he took the Warriors' one-year, $3.47 million qualifying offer and waited for the league-mandated trading prohibition to end, which it did on Jan.1.

"If he's not moved, everybody loses," said Bill McCandless, one of Pietrus' agents. "The Warriors get no compensation, and Mike stands to lose insofar as the number of teams" interested in his services this summer.

McCandless reiterated Tuesday that the team had been close to dealing Pietrus last week, but that assertion was flatly rejected by Mullin and others in the organization.

The sticking point with any and all potential deals, as it was back in July, remains what constitutes a fair price for Pietrus.

Cameron accused of reviving war on single parents

· Campaigners speak out on Tory plans to cut benefits
· Conservatives win support of leading welfare adviser

Will Woodward, chief political correspondentWednesday January 9, 2008

Guardian

Child poverty campaigners last night accused David Cameron of reviving the Tories' war on single parents after the Conservative leader unveiled plans to demand community work from the long-term jobless.

Ministers also attacked the opposition plans - which include a clampdown on incapacity benefit claims as well as punitive measures for people who refuse job offers - but mainly on cost grounds, arguing that the Tories could not deliver the changes and fulfil their commitment to spending £3bn from savings on ending the married couples' tax penalty.

Doctor’s dispatch from Darfur region

Since Ive gotten to Darfur Ive been working with Sudanese doctors in the a small hospital and in the refugee camps closest to the town. There are still about 90100,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP's) in 7 camps.

There are about 4050 Sudanese doctors working with 1015 Non-government Organizations (NGOs). Most of the docs are new medical school graduates waiting to get into internships. Even though the facilities are primitive, sometimes just grass mats for walls, a sand floor and a big blue tarp from the United Nations for a roof, they are providing pretty good care. The clinic I spend the most time in has a lab tech with a microscope to do blood slides for malaria and stool investigations for intestinal parasites.

The people are generally friendly and playful.
