Sales up in Naples area in January, attitudes are upbeat

In January, home sales rose although prices fell in the Naples area, a report released Thursday showed.

There were 264 home sales last month, compared to 261 a year ago. That included 142 condo sales, compared to 126 in January 2007, a more than 12 percent increase.

“The buyers who are coming down for season haven't seen prices like this in a while," said Joe Ballarino, president and CEO of Amerivest Realty in North Naples.

The Naples Area Board of Realtors report released Thursday reflects sales made in Collier County through the Sunshine MLS, excluding Marco Island. It includes an overall market summary and breaks sales down by price and geographic area carved out by zip code.

In January, homes priced at less than $300,000 saw the biggest jump in sales -- from 81 a year ago to 103.

PEDAL POWER: Nonprofit empowers adults, kids by helping them build and ...

To Maurice Potts, bicycles were simply large toys, good for just riding around the neighborhood, with no destination in mind.

That was before the semi-retired doctor took a class two years ago to learn to build and repair bicycles at Back Alley Bikes, a nonprofit program in Detroit's Cass Corridor that teaches children and adults how to build their own bikes from scrap parts and do repairs.

There, Potts discovered that for many inner-city residents who don't have access to cars and can't afford public transportation, bikes are a tool, a necessity.

Poland's Gen. Jaruzelski has left hospital after treatment

The former leader remains a divisive figure in Poland because of his decision to impose martial law on Dec. 13, 1981, in an effort to crack down on the fledgling Solidarity movement, the trade union that launched Poland's peaceful anti-communist revolt in 1980.

DFO: Count me among those who believe the judiciary, particularly the federal judiciary and 9 U.S. Court of Appeals, is out of control. When a single federal judge can overturn the clear will of the electorate, something's wrong.

DFO: Do you believe judicial activism is out of control? Or that WND and I should quit watching "Conspiracy Theory"?

Around the Mountains: Town queasy about sliding snow

A LEED-certified building designed to minimize its environmental impact need cost no more than about 3 percent than more than other buildings, building experts said. What is undeniable is that green homes cost less in following years, because of generally improved energy efficiency.

Important in designing a green home, experts told the magazine, is for the architects, builders and developers to hold meetings at the outset, as the most important aspects of green building must be incorporated into building design.

Gunnison unsure it wants thin-air testing
GUNNISON At 8,000 feet, the Gunnison/Crested Butte Regional Airport is attractive to aeronautical companies wanting to test aircraft in thinner air. The valley is broad and the air is mostly calm.

Boeing has tested there in the past, and last summer QuinetiQ, a London-based defense contractor, tested a new rendition of its Sea King helicopter.

Goods not feeling bad anymore

After being limited to 11 points, tying his season low, in the loss to Stanford last month in Berkeley, Anderson, the Pac-10's leading scorer, was 2-for-13 from the field this time and was held to 15 points, all in the second half.

Some of it was the defensive pressure applied by 7-foot Robin Lopez and Taj Finger, but some of it was merely Anderson having a bad night.

"He had some open threes that he usually makes," Brook Lopez said.

In fact, Anderson missed on two three-point attempts that might have turned around the game and put the Bears (15-10, 6-8) back into the NCAA Tournament picture.

With 7:40 left and the Bears trailing by two, Anderson missed badly on a three-point try. Then, with 4:10 to go and the Bears again down by two, Anderson again failed on a three-point attempt.
