Truckee railyard project unveiled

A project that would double the size of Truckee's historic downtown has entered the public review process.

In the planning stages for several years, the ambitious "railyard project" would involve realignment of Donner Pass Road and relocation of the railroad's balloon track – a large circular track used for turning snowplow engines.

"It took two years, but Union Pacific has agreed to move the balloon track half a mile east," said Rick Holliday, developer of the 75-acre project.

100-year-old cinema closure fight

In Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, 4,000 people have already signed a petition to prevent the Theatre Royal closing in April.

Managers who have been told the lease has run out are hoping the discovery of an old Edwardian theatre on the site will help keep the cinema open.

The cinema leaseholder Brian Bull has refused to comment.

Wendy Marsh, a part-time duty manager at the cinema, said they were told just over two weeks ago that the cinema is to close its doors on 10 April.

Ms Marsh said she understood two shops and four offices next to the cinema had also been told they would have to leave because their lease expired, although they would be able to stay for longer.

She said they had been unable to get information on who actually owned the land on which the cinema stands, but she also believed there were plans to develop it.

Huckabee vows a fight; McCain eyes knockout

Its just the facts making your guys look bad. Whats surprising is that were not aware of this 7 years on. You did know that Bush and Cheney fought the 911 commission? They refused to allow Condi to testify to the commission until public pressure forced their hand. Bush & Cheney both refused to testify under oath. They even refused to "discuss" individually. They would only "discuss" w/ the commission if they were both "discussing" together. Like a ventriloquist and its sidekick.

Barack Obama: My America

We met women who had been missionaries in Kenya and greeted me in Swahili, and farmers who tracked the financial pages of The Wall Street Journal before setting out on their tractors. Several times a day, I pointed out to Dan the number of men we met sporting white linen slacks or silk Hawaiian shirts. In the small dining room of a Democratic party official in Du Quoin, I asked the local state's attorney about crime trends in his largely rural, almost uniformly white county, expecting him to mention joy-riding sprees or folks hunting out of season.

"The Gangster Disciples," he said, munching on a carrot. "We've got an all-white branch down here – kids without jobs, selling dope and speed."

By the end of the week, I was sorry to leave. Not simply because I had made so many new friends, but because in the faces of all the men and women I'd met I had recognised pieces of myself.

Doggone bills: Pet insurance bites medical bills

When picking an insurer, she suggests the policy allow freedom of choice in selecting a veterinarian, cover some preventive care, and not reduce coverage when the animal gets older. Strauss said it makes sense from a financial standpoint to insure new puppies and kittens because insurance generally is less expensive for younger animals."It's well worth the monthly payments in the end," Strauss said, sharing her personal praise of Veterinary Pet Insurance. She cites its "excellent response time" in reimbursing the family, noting, "They don't try to dictate what kind of care you should have, (and they) take doctors' recommendations."Insurance firms range from ASPCA Pet Health Insurance that helps support the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to Veterinary Pet Insurance, the nation's oldest and largest provider, founded by veterinarians in 1982, and insuring more than 460,000 pets nationwide. To find a good insurance fit, study all the options and review policy limits, pre-existing condition rules and the fine print.

Kleinhans out as AD in Odem

Odem went 6-4 last season, but a 2-4 finish in District 31-2A kept the Owls out of the playoffs for the second straight year.

Increased pressure from the community forced Parker to make a decision.

"He's been an excellent coach, but you know how it gets when you're not winning and the community starts complaining that a change is needed," Parker said. "I kind of held off, hoping some of the talk would die down, but it didn't. We figured it would be a good time to do it. It's not a real pleasant thing to do, especially when you like somebody, but sometimes the community speaks louder."

Parker said Kleinhans is likely to be reassigned within the athletic department and will remain at the school until his contract expires at the end of the school year. Kleinhans plans to continue his duties for now, but not all of them.

Heliopolis: Rebirth of the City of the SunAgnieszka Dobrowolska and ...

The work is broken up into five sections, the most enjoyable of which is the chapter entitled “The People Speak." Flip first to this series of mini-profiles of veteran Heliopolitans who talk fondly of their personal experiences of living in the Sun City. Meet Edward the bartender at perennial favorite Le Chantilly, diamond tycoon Berge Touloumbadijian and photography buff Emad Baki, from whom many of the book's illustrations come.

Dobrowolska and Dobrowolski — themselves Heliopolis residents for 15 years — approached the European Union to help fund this AUC Press publication. The couple's passion for the city permeates every page of the book, with an impressive cache of antique and present-day photographs lovingly arranged alongside reprints of official documents, plans and permits.

London Fashion Week: Armand Basi / Nicole Farhi / House of Holland

You have heard about the bicycle built for two. But how about the dress built for two, or even three? There was not a hint of size zero as the Armand Basi collection took to the catwalk in the Banqueting Rooms at Whitehall, during London Fashion Week yesterday.

Unabashed pitches, a grand party and where's the water?

Where to start, where to start? ... Give it up for Rob Oneto he of Ruggeri, Jensen, Azar & Associates who is also on our community pulse panel (see opposite page). When responding to this week's question, Rob went "postal" in his patented hilarious way, sending in the accompanying picture (look close) don't worry, Rob, MayorAl is working on delivering a new P.O. which hopefully won't get lost in the shuffle.

Shuffling your feet or dancing your socks off to rock 'n' roll band Shaboom at the world famous Gilroy Garlic Festival may be a thing of the past. It's all in "negotiations," we're told by Entertainment Chair "King" Kurt Chacon. Hmmm ... well, if the deal can't be done, here's an unabashed pitch for a great band, the Groove Kings, who rocked the house at Kirigin Cellars last weekend under warm, blue skies.
