Cathy Hall to reign as 2007 Hanover Christmas Mother

It is official. Cathy Hall of Mechanicsville will reign as the Hanover Christmas Mother for 2007.Hall was nominated by the Mechanicsville Ruritan Club to serve as this year's ambassador. The announcement was made Oct. 31 at a gathering of beautiful, dedicated ladies who had served as Christmas Mother during Christmases past.Frank and Deborah Flippo, of Pebble Hill in Doswell hosted this much-anticipated annual tea.The Christmas mother program began in 1950 by the Doswell Women's Club, whose members graciously provided the refreshments for this year's tea. After the program grew by leaps and bounds, this wonderful group of ladies decided that they needed help, so the Doswell Ruritan Club took over the reins and have been the steering committee for the past 18 years. As the county began to grow and more and more Ruritan Clubs wanted to be involved, the Doswell Ruritans decided to involve all the clubs in Hanover. Now, each Ruritan Club has an opportunity to nominate a woman who they feel can best fill the big shoes of serving as Christmas Mother.

Sheppard Industries replaces Unix system with ERP deployment

The Sheppard Industries Group is rolling out an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system to support its operations throughout Australasia.

It will replace a Quanta Unix-based legacy system which was highly modified and designed more for the needs of a retail organisation rather than a distributor running a complex value chain, according to Paul Schnell, the company's CFO.

"We'd been using the previous system for the past 20 years. However, it was no longer able to keep up with our business growth," he said.

The bicycle designer and distributor of the popular Avanti brand is deploying the Lawson M3 Enterprise Management System along with Lawson Business Intelligence suite and related maintenance and services.

The company has offices in Christchurch, Melbourne and Perth.

Carnegie man guilty of killing roommate

A jury convicted a Carnegie man today of fatally stabbing his roommate and then beheading, dismembering and eviscerating him and concealing the body in a shallow grave.

James Baldwin Jr., 24, presented evidence at trial that he was mentally ill when he attacked Brendon Glen-David Martin, 19, on Jan. 25, 2006. He showed no emotion when the jury foreman announced the panel of seven men and five women had found him guilty of first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse, meaning they'd ruled against his insanity defense.

The victim's parents said the family has been torn apart by the tragedy. His father, Craig Martin, explained he had attempted suicide five times since Brendon died, and had been assigned a service dog to monitor his mood swings. The victim's mother, Sarah Memel, has suffered a heart attack and other health ailments which she said were related to the trauma.

Airport defibrillator saves heart attack victim

The Ohio man was the 19th person resuscitated at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport since the installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in December 2000. He was reported today to be in stable condition.

According to airport authorities, on Wednesday night a Mesa Airlines flight, operating as US Airways Express, was pulling away from the gate when the man collapsed.

Another passenger, an off-duty paramedic, checked the man for a pulse, didnt detect a heartbeat and then began CPR. After the pilot pulled the plane back to the gate, a Mesa Airlines employee retrieved an AED and used it.

Phoenix fire paramedics on bicycles arrived in less than three minutes and determined that the mans pulse had been restored.

Gadgets for cars star at convention

Other companies are displaying steering wheels with imbedded LCD displays that give navigation information while allowing the driver to keep one eye on the road and license-plate cameras that display video on the rear-view mirror.

To emphasize the automobile's new role as an electronics center, General Motors Chairman and Chief Executive Rick Wagoner is scheduled to give a keynote speech today. The role traditionally is reserved for the Samsungs, Microsofts and Sonys of the world.

Posters Loom Large in Dour Pakistani Poll Campaign

LAHORESecurity fears may have kept Pakistani politicians off the streets, but their faces can be seen every way one turns in the city of Lahore.

With days to go before the Feb. 18 poll for new national and provincial assemblies there doesn't appear to be any room left for more posters in a city regarded as the nerve centre of Pakistani politics.

They peer down from giant posters plastered on buildings and billboards and from banners hanging on lamp posts in the capital of Punjab, the province where half of Pakistan's 160 million people live and from where half of the parliament will be elected.

Yet printers in the narrow streets of small workshops say business is way down compared with past campaigns, even as their presses pump out a blizzard of posters as parties make a final push to sway a public that opinion polls show is tired of President Pervez Musharraf and the politicians who surround him.

Can motorsport ever be eco-friendly?

They have adapted two Honda Hybrid cars (vehicles that combine electric and petrol power, and are thus more environmentally friendly) for use in the competitive world of rally driving. This is the first time hybrid cars have been used in a rally competition, and these vehicles – while admittedly not being the most streamlined or snazzy of rides – are optimised to compete with conventional rally cars. In doing so, they output exceptionally low emissions of CO2 and toxins, and give a level of fuel efficiency never seen before in the sport.

All of which means that if you care to don one of the white helmets that Andrews and Meeson wear to career around Millbrook's many twists and turns, it is hard initially to notice the difference between their vehicle and a normal rally car.
