It wasnt so much the final product that inspired him as the act of creating it. Shady graduated from the Lego set to household appliances, becoming a handyman around the house. By his teens, Shady dreamed of being an electrical engineer when he grew up. But a 76 percent on his thanaweya amma exam in 1993 doomed him to the faculty of commerce, English section, at Cairo University. We are victims of an educational system that virtually assigns careers depending on how well you can memorize and spit back textbooks during exam time, he claims. But Shady is one of those people who dont mind playing the hand they are dealt and making the most of it. After graduation, he landed a cushy job as an analyst in a large financial consulting firm. He was soon disillusioned, however, complaining of being treated as a second-class employee by a demotivating and abusive boss who seemed to only respect made in the West degrees.
A New Apple Indicator: Steve's Airplane Bills??
Morgan Stanley's Kathryn Huberty has a theory about Apple stock. It's a buy. But wait until you see one of her reasons: Steve Jobs is flying around in his private Gulfstream V jet (tail number N2N) on Apple business a little more than usual. She reports in a research note noticed by Barron's today that Apple reimbursed Jobs $550,000 for expenses related to the jet during the most recent quarter. That's a lot for a single quarter. Apple's 10K for the 2007 fiscal year reports that during that year, Apple reimbursed jobs for $776,000 in plane expenses. In 2006 it was $202,000. In 2005 it was $1.1 million, or about $275,000 per quarter. That suggest that Jobs is spending more time in the air on company time than is typical. To Huberty that indicates that he's doing deals, suggesting that more big announcements are coming.
Hit-run cyclist was new to Sydney
THE cyclist killed in yesterday's hit-run crash in Punchbowl has been revealed as an Egyptian national who only arrived in Sydney recently. Police would not confirm the name but The Daily Telegraph Online understands the rider was Mina Ayad Wahba. The 30-year-old is understood to be a student. A group of friends left a bouquet of flowers at the scene this morning to mark his death. Police have confirmed they are still hunting the driver of a medium to large sized truck believed to have killed the cyclist in a crash on Wattle St at 7.45am yesterday. Acting Senior Sergeant John Kelly said the injuries were "quite horrific''. The impact appeared to have been so great that Mr Wahba's helmet was ripped from his head.
Friends disunited
Last week, the rumour mill cranked up a gear with the names of likely candidates such as Otto Thoresen, chief executive of Edinburgh neighbour Aegon UK – better known for Scottish Equitable – thrown into the melting pot. The latest gossip was inevitable following the will-he-won't-he departure of highly regarded Trevor Matthews as Standard's head of UK life and pensions, a key lieutenant who played a vital role in the company's transition from basket case to membership of the FTSE-100.Matthews was also the heir apparent, the plain-speaking Australian who had arrived at the firm's Lothian Road headquarters at a time when the company was – by some accounts – a busted flush. He'd taken a gamble, leaving a secure and senior job in Japan with Manulife to join a struggling Scottish company not only in need of modernisation but some firm foundations to ensure it stayed in business.Matthews was a breath of fresh air, popular with the staff and a huge asset when the company began its roadshows to sell the share issue.
Bike-theft suspect hangs self in hospital
A Longview man who faced multiple charges for allegedly stealing a string of expensive bicycles throughout the Northwest killed himself Saturday morning in a Longview psychiatric hospital where he'd been admitted after two previous suicide attempts. Jacob J. Bos, a 35-year-old podiatrist, was the subject of a Page 1 story Friday in The Seattle Times. Longview police spokeswoman Deborah Johnson said Bos committed suicide at St. John Medical Center in Longview at 6 a.m. Bos hung himself with a belt in a hospital bathroom, according to Dr. Richard Kirkpatrick, who owns the clinic where Bos worked. Bos had pleaded not guilty in Cowlitz County Superior Court to 12 counts of possessing or selling stolen bikes. Seattle police arrested him last month after they traced him through DNA on a coffee cup left at a Fremont bicycle shop, where he'd allegedly stolen a $6,800 bike, and on another occasion, a $5,500 bike.
