| Road rage doc receives discharge
A Belle River doctor who was previously fined for physically and emotionally abusing patients received a conditional discharge Friday for a case of road rage in which he punched a woman in the face. In handing down the decision, which carries 12 months probation for Dr. Charles Rathe, Justice Micheline Rawlins said the road rage was "an isolated act in an otherwise exemplary life." Rawlins also took issue with the prosecution's suggestion that the assault was even more aggravating because Rathe punched a woman. She said she was "standing up for women" and that the suggestion by assistant Crown attorney George Spartinos was "sexist." .

Man cycles backwards for HIV awareness
Curan Wright, 36, said his voyage, which began in California, is aimed at raising awareness for homelessness, HIV/AIDS and what he described as the need for a federal medical marijuana law, The Miami Herald reported Monday. Wright, who has ridden bicycles backwards since he was a teenager, uses his peripheral vision and experience to navigate his modified single-gear Redline bicycle without the use of mirrors. Wright said during a recent stop in Key West, Fla., that he was disappointed when he passed through Washington and could not get an audience with Capitol Hill lawmakers. "They act like they don't have to hear me," he said. "I don't have money. I'm a nobody to them. I'm just a homeless man with HIV, who got it on my own because I didn't practice safe sex and used needles." .
Roses ānā Razzies (Feb. 22)
ROSE (roz) n. One of the most beautiful of all flowers, a symbol of fragrance and loveliness. Often given as a sign of appreciation.RASPBERRY (raz'ber'e) n. A sharp, scornful comment, criticism or rebuke; a derisive, splatting noise, often called the Bronx cheer. We hereby deliver:* ROSES to our abundance of young local talent. We are continually impressed with the depth and variety of talent in our (sorta) little town. In the category of "early promise in the arts and sciences," we had much to applaud this week.We celebrate the expertise of the very young musicians who took part Tuesday in the Corvallis OSU Symphony's 2008 Children's Concert at the LaSells Stewart Center. They sang and played instruments with older international talent and made us proud. Then there is the high-wattage brilliance of the 175 Crescent Valley High School students who will participate today and Saturday in the Central Western Oregon Science Expo at Western Oregon University. Our best wishes and future hopes accompany them.

Young DM inventor snatches spotlight
A Des Moines boy got a nice bit of free national advertising for his latest invention - The Snatcher - when he appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" last week. Alek Luong's device, which he demonstrated on the daytime television talk show, is essentially a wide box with teeth that attaches to the front of a lawn mower. The box has wheels, and as the wheels turn, brushes push items such as dog poop, golf balls and walnuts into the box. "The idea is to pick up things before they get to the lawn mower," said Alek, a fifth-grader at Lawson Elementary School in Johnston. .
