Sale of the century (again) at Fishs Eddy

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Need some dinner plates adorned with the Lexus car logo? Or unglazed porcelain hand molds (the five-finger kind once used to make plastic gloves)? Those are some of the more unusual items shoppers can expect to find at a sale later this month inside the Fishs Eddy storage warehouse on Front Street in Stapleton. For those who thought the Manhattan-based tableware retailer had disappeared completely from Staten Island when it closed its Bay Street retail shop in St. George in 2005, there is one last chance to get the bargain home goods in this borough.

Never before open to the public, the storage warehouse at 450 Front St. will open for a close-out weekend sale starting Friday, Jan. 25. There the bulk of inventory, stacked high in dusty baskets and boxes, consists of thousands of pieces of surplus restaurant-grade tableware, glassware and silverware, including demitasse spoons, cocktail forks, shot glasses and whiskey jugs, according to Fishs Eddy owner Julie Gaines.

Two of the three dogs bore scars both new and old.

One dog had numerous cuts and what appeared to be an eye infection, while another, with tightly cropped ears, had scars both new and old on its face.

An animal control officer at the scene said the dogs will be killed by the end of the day.

Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said Brunston was charged with a violation of the leash law and arrested for the warrant originally issued on Nov. 4.

On Wednesday evening Mullins said Brunston was released on $237 bond.

Very risky to fiddle with the squiggle

Oh dear. The marketing boffins at the ABC have got their hands on the squiggle because they believe it doesn't communicate effectively in the 21st century.

The iconic brand identity with its superb design represents an organisation with a reputation for excellence and leading-edge intelligence. By all means play with the brand identity as it is expressed in different media and enjoy the flexibility that the mark allows, but please don't go back to the drawing board to create other designs that will only undermine the squiggle. That would be an act of corporate suicide, as it will only create confusion among those of us who instantly recognise and respond to the brand mark.

Dramatic 'Heavy Hitter' ads now considered OK

Members of a local Boy Scout troop appear in an advertisement for Las Vegas lawyer Glen Lerner that ran during the Super Bowl. The boy on the left portrays a young Lerner, supposedly honing his "Heavy Hitter" skills to defend a boy whose nose was bloodied by a bully.

Iraqi official and 2 American soldiers wounded when bomb explodes in ...

The new law could prohibit even more former officials from government service and even purge many suspected Baathists from the security ministries, which have struggled to integrate Iraq's armed forces. According to some Iraqi officials' estimates, 38,000 government officials could be effected by the new law if it is strictly imposed. But many Iraqi politicians said it remains to be seen how the law will be implemented.
