| Engineering Sturgeon Bay’s future
Among those currently evolving are renovations to Egg Harbor Road, the spring construction on Third Avenue and the ongoing construction of the new Maple-Oregon Street Bridge. Vexing though these projects may be, city engineer Tony Depies maintains an unflappable composure in the public eye. I think its my personality that keeps me satisfied with this job and keeps me from not being frustrated, Depies said. Having to live in the parameters of a public atmosphere, you have to be level-headed. When I get frustrated or flustered, I get red cheeks, but thats about it. It is likely that Depies red cheeks flare up during the numerous meetings he attends involving public works in Sturgeon Bay, especially those regarding recent construction. Usually when we make a decision, its not unanimous and we often revisit previous decisions, Depies said.
Mishi Saran: Indian Author With a China Craze
In the book, she follows in the footsteps of 7th Century Chinese monk Xuanzang and his journey to India to bring Buddhism back to China. Whereas the monk had an obsession with India, Mishi describes herself as an Indian woman with a China craze. On a recent visit to Singapore, she spoke with RSIs Loretta Foo and revealed when her self-proclaimed obsession with Chinese culture began. MS: Well I think it all started unexpectedly when I was an undergraduate in the United States in 1986 or 87 when I was there. I was flipping through the catalogue of courses offered at my university and happened to see that there was a course on the Chinese language, Mandarin, which was completely intriguing to me because I have always been interested in languages, and I had studied a few growing up in different countries in my childhood.
Vandal spreads tacks to scupper cyclists on Beach Rd
AN anti-cyclist vandal who scattered road tacks in the path of bike riders could have killed someone, police say. Officers today blasted the offender, saying only luck saved a rider from injury or death. A large number of tacks, similar to drawing pins, were deliberately placed along Beach Rd in Mentone on Saturday and caused punctures to several cyclists' tyres. Sen-Sgt Hans Harms, of the Kingston Traffic Management Unit, condemned the act of stupidity and accused the offender of derailing bids to ease tensions between drivers and cyclists. Sen-Sgt Harms said a cyclist could have lost control and swerved into vehicles or other riders. "This stupid act does not assist anyone. "I, along with other organisations such as the Amy Gillett Foundation, are trying to work together with bicycle riders to ensure all road users are safe including vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
On Movies: Austin fete braces for the Philadelphians
Yo, it's a Phillywood moment. In a couple of weeks, indie filmmakers from Philadelphia will be out in force - and out and about in Austin, Texas - at the 15th annual South by Southwest Film Festival. Running March 7 through 15 in front of the storied SXSW Music Festival, this year's screen program boasts hundreds of features and shorts, and more than a few prominent entries from the buzzing Philly scene. Anyone who has ambled around South Street, down the streets of Queen Village and the back alleys of Bella Vista, knows the work of Isaiah Zagar: His mosaics - mirror shards, broken china, clay figurines, wine bottles, tiles and bicycle wheels - adorn the exteriors of scores of houses and businesses, and his studio, on the 1000 block of South, has become a tourist destination. Jeremiah Zagar, Isaiah's son, has made a deeply personal documentary, In a Dream, about his father, his father's art, and his father's marriage to Julia Zagar.

Courtney Love, actually
As she raised the subject four times over the course of two hours, this meant she cried four times: real, eye-dabbing, make-up-running, sniffy-nosed tears. But this is to come. For now, if anything, it is she who is bringing me close to tears with her Buddhist chanting. I have to endure 15 minutes of it before the interview can get under way. We are in her hotel suite, one of London's most exclusive. She is in the adjoining bedroom, chanting loudly. I am sitting waiting for her on a sofa surrounded by unruly piles of magazines, a guitar in a case, two full ashtrays, burning joss sticks, property details for a £4 million house in Notting Hill, and racks of her clothes - Givenchy, mostly, as Love is the new muse for that label. .
Police blotter
A Frederick man was arrested Wednesday on theft charges, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. Deputies searched 48-year-old Wilbert P. Price's residence in the 9600 block of Brigadoon Place and found stolen items, including electronic game systems, jewelry and a credit card, according to Cpl. Jennifer Bailey of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. Price was charged with first-degree burglary, theft of over $500 and destruction of property. With help from a witness, deputies identified Price as a suspect in a Jan. 11 burglary in the 9600 block of Brigadoon Place. Deputies then obtained a search warrant for Price's residence. Deputies looked for similarities between that case and a burglary of another home on the same block Jan. 7, in which the electronic equipment was stolen, Bailey said.

New mix of homebuyers hitting Hempstead
When Candice Glibbery and her boyfriend, Troy Ingenito, decided it was time to move out of separate residences in Ronkonkoma, Hempstead Village wasn't the first place they'd thought to look for a co-op. But then they started pricing what was out there. Glibbery, 24, a visual merchandiser who designs the showroom floor for the Massapequa Ethan Allen store, says she started looking online, and "everything was in the $200,000 to $300,000 range" -- but most were old apartments that needed renovation. Then, Glibbery says, "I saw this place" -- Cedar Valley Apartments, a 1966-era building at 20 Wendell St. in Hempstead offering newly renovated co-ops. "The prices were much lower; the building had new everything," she says. "I came here on my lunch hour just to see the building.
