Pre-NADA Workshop to Bust Used-Car Myths

In fact, quite frankly, many new-car dealers gave up a lot of that business to the independents," Lescota said. "Well, guess what? The market is shifting, and it appears new-car sales may not break 16 million this year. And with profit margins as slim as they are today, dealers and used-car managers can't afford to make mistakes. Too much is at stake," he continued. So for dealers to be profitable in 2008, they basically have a couple of choices, Lescota said. "Either shore up their service department or get into the used-car business. By getting into the used-car business, they can certainly improve their fixed coverage because they go hand in hand. Chip and I will help dealers and used-car managers not only grasp the importance of this new reality but also how to come up with practical solutions they can implement," he further explained. At the same time, Lescota said he hopes dealers will look at the used-car department as an additional franchise, and not as a separate department. "Many dealers who are thinking 2008 will be a tough year are considering adding a new franchise to supplement their existing franchise.

After 63 Years of Marriage the Davises Offer Their Secrets

Marjory and Richard "Dick" Davis have beat the odds and then some, specifically; the marriage odds. This lovely Bristol Mills couple has been married and devoted to each other for 63 years, having celebrated their landmark anniversary on Jan. 30.

What's their secret to a long and happy marriage? "Keep out of your wife's hair," said Dick with a huge smile. "Respect and consideration," countered Marjory.

According to U.S. statistics, the divorce rate is dropping, but the average first marriage lasts only about seven years, and only about five percent of couples even reach the 50-year anniversary mark; fewer still are together after 63 years.

The lively Davis couple lives in a beautiful circa 1760 antique cape, made cozy and warm by a center chimney wood stove.

For the concept to work, it is crucial that the wind turbines be light, requiring further technological development.

This floating wind turbine demonstration project will require about $23 million to complete [6]. The comparative unit cost is about $7.7 million per MW installed. Hydro’s future goal for large offshore floating windfarms is far in the future, "but if we’re to succeed in 10 to 15 years, we have to start the work today," said Alexandra Bech Gjørv, Hydro’s director of new energy forms.

General Electric, in addition to manufacturing the 3.6 MW turbines slated for the Cape Wind project, has embarked on a multi-year research effort to design a 7 MW far offshore unit. The U.S. Department of Energy has signed a $27 million contract with GE for this development.

Spray-Painted Swastikas Mar Pfluger Bridge

Vandals spray-painted swastikas on the seats, rails and sidewalks of the Pfluger Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge for all to see.

The bridge is just more than six years old and a popular spot for those who visit the hike and bike trail along Lady Bird Lake.

Workers for the city's graffiti abatement program have their hands full. This past weekend they found more than 20 new cases of graffiti damage, including this latest case in Downtown Austin.

"It's a mess," said Tony Casarez, coordinator of the program. "That's gonna be the real tough one is getting the sidewalks cleaned up."

Casarez's crews were busy Monday, cleaning what they could.

In many cases, they'll use a pressure washer and chemicals, but the damage above Lady Bird Lake will need special treatment.
