Cyclist, truck collide near OHSU

So are all of you going to "git yer guns" out and shoot all the cyclists you see? Cars and vehicles can coexists, believe it or not, And if you argue that liberalism is a mental disorder then you have to say that so is conservatism.

And you are picking one example of a person who obviously made the mistakes and caused the accident, and applying it to all cyclists. There are just as many if not MORE moron divers out there.

Yes there are increased risks riding bikes, just like there are increased risks riding motorcycles, but I don't hear any of you calling to get them off the road too. Motorcycles are most often in accidents because drivers of cars and trucks don't see them, the same reasons as bicycles.

Face it, the real issue is that you just want the roads all to yourselves.

Song Yankun, 43, teacher

I do what I can for the environment. I take my own cutlery to my work canteen rather than using disposable chopsticks, which uses lots of wood. I recycle plastic bags by using them for rubbish and try to take my own bag when shopping. I'm glad the government brought in its new policy. [China has pledged to ban flimsy plastic bags from June.] When I go shopping, I don't really think about the environment. I am more concerned with food safety.

For me, though, the two biggest environmental worries are water and air pollution. When I was a child we lived in the hutong alleyways and heated our home with coal. I had no idea that it was dirty. But now, we have different standards and more knowledge about the health impact. When I was a child we drank water straight from the tap. Now my children have bottled water only.

US elections 2004

For supporters of John Kerry, who have seen allegations about the Democratic candidate's military record sap his campaign, it must have seemed like a case of just deserts.

The president, George Bush, was last week looking vulnerable on the same grounds after CBS's flagship current affairs show, 60 Minutes, broadcast a report claiming he had been suspended from pilot duties for failing to meet the required standards. It was also claimed that a commanding officer had been put under pressure to "sugar coat" Mr Bush's performance reviews.

But while CBS stands by its story, allegations have now surfaced that 60 Minutes based a large part of the report on forged documents.

Although what one man - even a presidential candidate - did more than 30 years ago can seem rather trivial, the US election is being fought between a self-declared "war president" and a man who, in stump speeches, claims he would defend his country as president in the way he had defended it as a young man.

Holy Cross head resigns in dispute with chairman of governors

THE principal of top-ranking Holy Cross College has resigned after a dispute with the chairman of governors.

Mr Mike O'Hare will step down in August after being in charge of the Catholic sixth-form centre for 15 years, during which time it has become one of the best in the country.

His shock resignation follows an argument with Anne Fox, chairman of the board of governors, about the appointment of a deputy principal in May last year.

Mr O'Hare disagreed with the selection committee's preferred candidate, and wrote to Ms Fox about his concerns. He also discussed the matter with staff at the college in Manchester Road.

But Ms Fox claimed that he had breached confidentiality by speaking to the staff members and issued a written warning.

Bicyclist killed; pickup driver faces DUI manslaughter charges

A bicyclist was killed Monday night on U.S. 41 when a pickup truck hit her from behind, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The FHP reports that Robert James Bacon, 33, of Naples faces charges of DUI manslaughter, DUI property damage and leaving the scene of a crash involving a death.

Maria Alba Alvarez-Hernandez, 38, of Naples was pronounced dead at the scene, which was near Imperial Golf Course Boulevard.

FHP reports state both the truck and bicycle were southbound on U.S. 41, with the bicycle in its proper lane and the truck in another lane. Reports state the truck crossed into the bicycle lane and hit Alvarez-Hernandez's bicycle. The truck then fled the scene, FHP reports state.

The reports do not say if there were witnesses to identify the truck, but troopers report that it was found and its driver has been identified as Bacon.

A note to liberals about economics

Its economy declined from one of the strongest in Africa to one of the world's weakest after nationalization of industry and redistribution of private land. Then there is Ireland. Ireland's heavy industries, due to poor planning and international problems, almost disappeared by the early 1980s.Agriculture was constrained by production quotas. There was mass unemployment and the national debt had doubled, mostly due to welfare programs and subsidies. This changed in the mid 1990s when Ireland began to institute free market economics and lower taxes. Ireland is now ranked, by some measures, as the second wealthiest per capita country in the world. Then there is China. The socialist policies of Mao almost destroyed one of the most long-lasting societies on the planet. Since China opened up its economy with free markets, they have achieved the second highest GNP in the world, and unless they return to socialism, they will catch up to, and perhaps, even pass the United States. We could even conduct experiments in which one country is given all the resources except economic freedom and the other country gets almost no resources, but is given a more free market.
