| School Lunches Get Leafy in Los Angeles
The parent often becomes inspired to reduce red lights in the home and sometimes even in his or her own diet. We were wondering if there is a flaw in the growth charts used by pediatricians. We have heard they were designed from averages of children in the 1940s living in the Midwest. Is there a chart we can use that might more accurately reflect what our children's weight should be? — Herb Weltig, Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. Pediatricians and family physicians should use growth charts developed in 2000 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These are made up of measures from several national samples of children from the 1960s through the 1990s. There is even a body mass index growth chart for children age 2 years and older. Body mass index is a way to look at both weight and height and how they fit together.
Bogus Universities and Dodgy Degrees
The website also states that the university has obtained a license in a Swiss canton, but it is not a Swiss university. The site lists thousands of other unaccredited colleges that are trading in university degrees and diplomas. When one of the operators of the many bogus colleges affiliated to the Irish International University was jailed in London last week, the plight of the international student in the western countries was highlighted. Almost all students at the Irish International University are Asians and Africans, who struggle to work to pay thousands in tuition fees to be rewarded with a piece of paper. Often they fall decidedly for the scams played by bogus colleges because they cannot afford the exorbitant fees charged by the accredited learning institutions. Other times, they are conned by learning institutions who exploit the desperation of unsuspecting immigrants who necessarily have to study their way through the hustle and bustle of life in the cold, to renew their student visas.
Hodge attacks Salmond's Chessmen gambit
Scotland as we all know, was a barbarous nation that should have been easily conquered by the extremely civilised Nation to it's South. And of course any sort of artistic ability evaporates the further it gets from the wee triangle of Oxford Cambridge and London. .
Are we at risk?
But this also is a loose string at the end of a tangled ball. Pull it, and questions will also arise of the Bush administration's fast-and-loose approach to science in matters from global warming to endangered species protection. It's time someone pulled the string. .
Selling the nonski slopes
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - On a recent Saturday, Cully Gustafson was racing down a slope on a Hammerhead sled - a new piece of equipment that sports bicycle-like handlebars and a springy mesh seat - on his first trip to Tenney Mountain resort. "I haven't skied in a couple years," said the 46-year-old from Plymouth, Mass. "No time now with kids." With lifestyles so jam-packed and high-priced, fewer people are sinking time and money into skiing or snowboarding. So several New England resorts this season are trying to squeeze more money out of skiers and snowboarders while also luring people who otherwise would not set foot on the slopes by dedicating small sections of their mountains to easier-to-learn, cheaper activities such as sledding, snowshoeing, and winter hiking. After all, a day of skiing or snowboarding can easily cost $90 at popular mountains, while snowshoeing and cross-country skiing can be as little as $30.
The toxic legacy of plastic bags
At the heart of arguments against introducing a ban on the damaging common plastic shopping bag lies a stubborn refusal to consider anything other than the economic costs of keeping them. Plastic bags are cheap to make and cheap for shops to buy. We have become used to the convenience of them and think they make our lives somehow easier. But our easy addiction to plastic bags is destroying our environment, killing our marine life and birds, and is so pervasive and persistent that it is entering the food chain. How can those who assess plastic bags simply on their economic merits ignore the impacts of the waste left behind? How can any of us afford not to? In the half dozen decades since plastic became a regular part of our lives and plastic bags a common sight, the natural environment has become full to bursting with plastic rubbish.
Superfun surf and small-town vibe greets the 2005 Surfline Seal Beach ...
For the sixth time in the past seven years, conditions and a collective effort came together to pull off another great year for the Surfline Seal Beach Surfing Championships on the north side of the Seal Beach Pier. Thousands of dollars were raised for local charities and non-profit groups including the Surfrider Foundation, Seal Beach Junior Lifeguards, and other organizations. Local surfers, the Seal Beach Lifeguards, Surfline.com, and many local surf shops and businesses resurrected the annual local championships in 1999 after a 20-year hiatus. "This is a great way for all of us to give back to the community, and especially to the kids," said Sean Collins, President and chief Forecaster of Surfline, also a three-time winner of the event stretching back to the early 70's.
International Brain Awareness Week 2008
In the early 1900s, Sigmund Freud, Alois Alzheimer and Harvey Cushing were building their careers in neuroscience. Freud published his groundbreaking work The Interpretation of Dreams, Alzheimer identified Alzheimer’s disease, and Cushing was establishing neurosurgery as a specialty. A century later, the Society for Neuroscience has more then 38,000 members and a Google search on neuroscience brings up more than nine million hits. Neuroscience has become one of the leading fields of scientific endeavor and almost daily scientific papers are published detailing new findings about the brain and its functions. .

Two single mothers whose children were charged with armed robbery last year were told Tuesday they have 10 days to vacate their apartments in Charleston's Gadsden Green public housing complex. A third single mother could get a reprieve from the city's Housing Authority if her son can demonstrate a good record in school. .
