2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser Review - In Carbon County Wyoming

Though some have complained about blind spots because of the closed rear side panel, I found the outside rear view mirrors so good as to mitigate that blind-spot problem. And, the complaints of some reviewers about the cute, half-size, rear-hinged, rear passenger doors being restrictive is a bit overcritical, I think. It certainly is a big step up and into the less-than-roomy rear seat, but unless you regularly haul folks back there it would probably not be an issue.

So, let's wrap this up. In just our few days in Carbon County we've explored two mountain ranges and at least three world-class trout streams, drank beer and discovered characters (including an old cowboy singer) at six great old rustic bars, 4-wheeled up the side of a mountain and down into an otherwise inaccessible mountain valley in our remarkably competent Toyota FJ, relaxed at two beautiful alpine lakes, scorched my uvula on the hottest green chili in Wyoming, overnighted at some amazing inns, met dozens of fascinating people, encountered thousands of pronghorn antelope and one solitary bald eagle, and learned all about Carbon County, Wyoming.

In our view: Common sense is the best reason to applaud helmet law

If you have wheels under you, better have a helmet over you. That’s the message from the Vancouver City Council, which on Monday passed a law requiring helmets on riders of bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, roller blades, scooters and unicycles on public streets, sidewalks and trails.

The helmet law is the first in Clark County but is similar to regulations in Seattle, Spokane and Tacoma. We hope Clark County commissioners and other cities in the county follow suit.

Both supporters and opponents of the helmet law are able to debate this topic ad infinitum, and anecdotal references often cloud their arguments, but our preference is to rely on basic common sense. It just stands to reason that riders of these wheeled implements should be required to wear helmets in public places for reasons of public safety.

Coastal Post Online

The West Marin Medical Center in Point Reyes Station is one of the things that makes present West Marin what it is for the rest of us. Dr. Molly Bourne has been one of the best things around West Marin. Not just because she is a really nice lady, but because she embodies what is good and true here in West Marin. She IS what medicine SHOULD be all about. She was always open to new ideas and added her creativeness to our need for health care. She cares and takes more than the proscribed 10 minutes allowed by Managed Care, per patient. She seemed to actually know each of us as a human being. She is/was a gift to West Marin. One we are losing.
Molly Bourne got broad-sided by Managed Care and the crazy reality of our nation's for-big-profit-to-stockholders health system. An excellent and caring physician is leaving us because the overall system of health care in this county is a travesty of unfairness to doctor and patient alike.

April 2007

Health Inspector Richard Ray stressed several times that his proposed long-term rental regulations are meant to protect tenant's health and safety, but many at a Monday night forum to discuss the regulations voiced concern over how they single out landlords who rent year-round and could worsen an already serious housing shortage. I ON THE COURT Nantucket Court Report In Monday's District Court, Kimberly L. Baker, 25, of Florida, was scheduled for a status review of her case. She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on Nov. 17, 2005 and on Feb. 5, 2006. Accused kidnapper is held without bail Youth held on $6,500 After a set of special hearings in last Friday's District Court, the Polpis man charged with kidnapping and beating a former co-worker on April 12 was held in the Barnstable House of Correction without bail, and a high school student accused of threatening another student with a knife was held on $6,500 bail with a list of conditions in the event of his release.

Man who raped stepdaughter to stand trial in High Court

A 42-YEAR-OLD Singaporean man accused of tying up his stepdaughter and sexually assaulting her was ordered on Tuesday to stand trial in the High Court.

The man, a hawker assistant, faces one charge of rape and another of wrongfully restraining his stepdaughter to molest her. He also faces two counts of drug abuse.

The man was committed to stand trial on the four charges after a preliminary inquiry on Tuesday.

He cannot be named to protect the identity of his stepdaughter, a Chinese national who was 20 at the time of the alleged offences last June.

The prosecution has alleged the man raped his stepdaughter at their home, an HDB flat, at about 7pm on June 27.

He allegedly molested her after tying her hands behind her back and binding her ankles together.

Unstoppable Obama

On the basis, rather, of large-scale and unrelenting public pressure on Obama to match the vapid, happy talk with real action.

As for the whole "post-partisan" thing, if it means shameless acquiescence to Repub fascistic bullying then it is worse than meaningless. But if it means politics that benefit the vast majority of people in the country, including the Repub rank and file, then it is worth doing. And if you demonstrate by means of measurable improvement in people's lives, that a more humane, progressive political philosophy is more likely to improve people's lives then you have won. It's another New Deal and they can't stop you again until your children or their children grow up and lose faith and sellout and pull the ladder up behind them again.

I have no illusions about Obama.

NFL MIDSEASON REPORT: MVPs, key second-half games and cool predictions

Ah, the NFL midseason, the refreshing time of year when the media arrogantly pumps its chest over correct predictions (we told you Brandon Jacobs would make people forget about Tiki Barber once he got healthy!) and shies away from the opposite of good predictions (who knew Frank Gores bandwagon was actually a wagon with three wheels and no one pulling it?).

Sophie Ellis-Bextor calls for sweet childhood memories

Sophie Ellis-Bextor shows off more than a sweet tooth as she poses in a tonne of Hundreds and Thousands.

The 28-year-old singer was photographed by Rankin to launch a campaign to collect "hundreds and thousands" of the nation's childhood memories.

Life is sweet: Sophie Ellis-Bextor in a tonne of Hundreds and Thousands

The Children's Society is asking the public to describe their early recollections for a report on what a good childhood should look like.

Ellis-Bextor, mother of three-year-old Sonny, said: "I'm delighted to support The Children's Society's campaign to make childhood better for all children in the UK today.

"As a mum, I want my children to have some fantastic memories.

"Being covered in Hundreds and Thousands is much more fun than I imagined but the serious message is we really need hundreds and thousands of childhood memories - please share yours."

Martin Field, director of campaigns at the charity, said: "Recent research held up the UK as the worst country in the developed world to grow up in.
