| Wall Street extends gains; Dow up 100 points
Bond insurers have been hurt in the fallout from the mortgage and credit crises, and news of their problems has shaken the market. But those seeking good news found some in a Labor Department report that said the number of people seeking unemployment benefits last week fell for a fourth straight week. Applications for benefits dropped 1,000 to 301,000, pushing claims down to the lowest level in four months. Investors also appeared pleased by a widely anticipated agreement between Congressional leaders and the White House on an economic stimulus package. The agreement calls for most tax filers to be given refunds of $600 to $1,200, and more if they have children. Bill Dwyer, chief investment officer at MTB Investment Advisors in Baltimore, said Wall Street found some relief from word of the economic stimulus plan as well as the efforts of regulators to help bond insurers.
Inland factories slow production, index says
The slowdown washing over Inland Southern California's economy may be filtering down to the manufacturing sector, a report released Friday showed. The Purchasing Managers Index, which measures factory activity in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, declined to 46.6 in January from 50.9 in December, the Institute of Applied Research and Policy Analysis at Cal State San Bernardino reported. A reading below 50 suggests that the factory sector is contracting, although economists look for three consecutive months before considering it a trend. The Inland PMI has showed manufacturing growth for most of the past four years. .

Condolences may be sent to this e-mail address. Mrs. Biesanz never stopped writing, and a family member joked last night that she said she even had written her husband's dissertation. Her latest work, "Un año con Carmen. A Year with Carmen," is a series of stories in Spanish and English. It came out last year and is based on work she did with Carmen Naranjo, a well-known Costa Rican author. This was her 12th book. Others included an autobiography of her childhood in Minnesota, "Helmi Mavis: A Finnish-American Childhood," and several academic books on sociology that still are used at U.S. universities. Mr. and Mrs. Biesanz moved here for good in 1971. In addition to Richard, she is survived by a son, Barry, and a daughter, Katja.
Dublin police to ride three-wheeled scooter
DUBLIN Police will soon be patrolling the city's busiest shopping center on a three-wheeled, clean-energy scooter. The T3 scooter, which has a top speed of 25 mph, looks like a beefier version of a Segway. It runs on batteries that need recharging every 30 miles. The police department now uses patrol cars and bicycles to navigate the shopping center on Hacienda Drive and Dublin Boulevard. The scooter, which was donated by center businesses, will give officers a good option, said Dublin police Lt. Glenn Moon. Patrol cars have more visibility, a good deterrent to bad behavior, but they are harder to use in crowded areas, Moon said, while bikes can be used when officers don't necessarily want to be seen. The motorized scooter is the best of both worlds, he said. "It has the (visible) deterrent of a patrol car, but somewhat of the stealth" of a bike, Moon said.

Sure, sure, it's all been done before, but now I get to do it. Without further ado, here is my all-name team. 20 - Rod Smart - Who the Hell is Rod Smart you ask? Well he is none other than the fool who called himself "He Hate Me" and pretty much epitomized the debacle that was the XFL. 19. Elbert L. "Ickey" Woods - Running back his entire carreer for the Bengals. Hey, how many guys not named Humpty Hump have a dance named after them. The Ickey Shuffle remains high on the all time celebrations list. 18. "Chocolate Thunder" Darryl Dawkins - Perhaps more appropriate for wrestling or porn, but still has a nice ring to it. 17. "Pistol" Pete Maravich - LSU grad was a known practicioner of yoga, a part time ufologist, and could also play a little basketball. Died of a heart attack in 1988 at a young age.
Miscalculations dogged Romney from the start
The Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 and The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act became laws. Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Senator Richard Lugar represent two different wings of the Republican Party. Senator Obama has compiled an impressive record for a freshman senator, which is a clear indication of how President Barack Obama might effectively govern .
Kelvin in deep water while Scots walked tall
Here, support for Scottish independence rose to 40 per cent while panicking Unionist parties, led by Labour, set up a talking shop to rival the SNP Government's "national conversation". The publicly funded group would discuss how to give Holyrood greater powers without allowing the country control over its own affairs. "I believe that Scots seek a future that gives them the chance to walk taller," said 3ft 2in Labour leader, Wendy Alexander. Wendy's brother, Douglas, the International Development Secretary, faced the usual calls to resign after an official report fingered him for the Holyrood voting fiasco, in which 140,000 votes ganged agley. The report did not name him but accused a "small buffoon" of indulging in "party self-interest" when designing the ballot paper. Whitehall cock-ups continued when HM Revenue and Customs lost a copy of its entire child benefits database, containing details of 25 million people, who were urged to monitor their bank accounts "for unusual activity".
