Council considers Airport Zoning Overlay Tuesday

Salisbury City Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday to make some clarifications and corrections to its recently adopted Land Development Ordinance.

The council also will consider adding an Airport Zoning Overlay at the Rowan County Airport.

In a memorandum, the planning staff has reminded council members the new ordinance "is a working, organic document and not cast in stone."

"Staff recognizes that several — possibly multiple — text amendments will come before the Planning Board and City Council in the early months following adoption," the memo continues.

"Most of these early text amendments will address clarification, correction or interpretation issues."

The council meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 217 S.

Flip Shelton: Don't sweat the scorpions

NI Hao. I'm back from the Kingdom of Bicycles and had a cracker of a holiday. It seems my pre-travel worries were unwarranted. (Dear reader: if you missed my last column I was caught in a Chinese conundrum and feared retribution from the god of travel, Hermes.)

According to English pop songstress Katie Melua, there are "nine million bicycles in Beijing" and, given that the city is as flat as Ballarat, the topography is certainly conducive to cycling.

To give you some perspective -- just over one million bikes were sold in the whole of Australia last year, while in Beijing nine million bikes exist in an area roughly twice the size of Melbourne. That's about 536 bikes a square kilometre!

In bravery akin to a matador facing a rampaging bull, cyclists gather at intersections before building up enough strength in numbers to venture across.

OBT is a hotbed of tragedy, killings

For six grim miles, murder follows Orange Blossom Trail.

Twenty of the Orlando area's 91 murder victims so far this year were slain along a stretch of road that starts in the hidden neighborhoods near the Florida Mall and ends amid ragged bungalows in sight of downtown's high-rise condos.

Those deaths make the Trail the Orlando area's most dangerous corridor during a time of unprecedented bloodshed. From 2004 to 2006, the numbers of slayings in unincorporated Orange County and the city of Orlando more than doubled, from 55 to 113.

The Great Triumvirate and the Bobby Jones Years

Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen were at the height of their powers during this period, but the man who captured the imagination of golfers throughout the world was Bobby Jones. The young lawyer from Atlanta had a tremendous record on either side of the Atlantic and remained an amateur.

The Bobby Jones Years

Jones won the first of his five US Amateur Championship titles in 1924 and went on to win the Open three times, the US Open twice and the British Amateur once. In the magical season of 1930 he captured all four titles and retired immediately from competitive golf at the age of 30.

There then followed an era of home wins, although after Henry Cotton had regained the honours for Britain with victory at Royal St George's in 1934 there was a greatly reduced American challenge leading up to the second world war.

GETTING PERSONAL WITH... The newest Piston, Primoz Brezec

At 7-foot-1, the newly acquired Brezec is hard to miss. Depending on what language he's speaking, he also might be hard to understand. But it's a good thing he has a strong grasp on the English language. And if you see him around town, offer to buy him an Italian cappuccino. He'd really like that.
