Her first project was a transom for the window over the kitchen door. Next, she tackled the lower staircase window depicting pink and red waterlilies. It took her two years, she said, with many do-overs and lots of advice from her instructor, Jim Forrester. The upper window, depicting koi and a purple waterlily, went much faster -- nine months. Mrs. Short also laid the tile around the new gas fireplace in the living room and in the kitchen floor. "On the day before my daughter's engagement party, I finished the kitchen floor," she said, rolling her eyes. Her husband, who gleefully demonstrated the gas fireplace's remote control, "was the guy in the basement with the tile saw," she said. He also installed greenhouse windows in the living room and kitchen to give her a little more space for her 200 orchids, which overwinter throughout the house.
RAGBRAI liability issue still worries county officials
County officials representing towns along this summer's RAGBRAI route are still worried about liability issues involving bicycle riders, but they hope the Iowa Legislature will address the problem this year. This summer's seven-day bicycle tour doesn't pass through Crawford County, where the county's board of supervisors passed a resolution in October banning RAGBRAI or "any event of like kind and nature." .

Tour of California - 2.1 USA, February 19-26, 2006
Today had the last big climb of the race and it was the last climb [of the day], so I had do something to shake the race up because there's not many opportunities left. I had two team-mates sprint full-out on the climb and they were going real fast. When they pulled off, I just kept it going. I think what happened was that the people on my wheel lost my wheel, and the GC riders weren't in the position to grab my wheel or they couldn't, so a gap opened up. I was hoping someone else would come with me... Also, everyone knew the downhill was long and wide open and not very technical; you had to pedal the whole thing, so a group could easily come back and they [the GC riders] were counting on that. But I had to give it a try, because like I said, that was really the last big opportunity to do something.
B-N's first 'smart fortwo' car hits streets
McDaniel is smiling, too. After a nearly yearlong wait, he has the Twin Cities' first “smart fortwo" car. He picked it up in St. Louis on Monday and spent most of the day Tuesday showing it off to friends and co-workers.“I think it's great," said John Rediger, heating and air conditioning supervisor at Country Insurance. “I think it's absolutely fantastic. It's got plenty of room."You wouldn't guess it from the outside. The car, which only measures 8.8 feet long, 5.1 feet tall and 5.1 feet wide, takes up only half a parking space.“It only looks small from the outside," McDaniel said. “It's half of car. It has three cylinders instead of six and weighs 1,700 pounds instead of 3,400."That leads to decent gas mileage — 41 miles per gallon on the highway and 33 miles per gallon in town. (It uses premium gasoline.)“It has an 8-gallon tank, and I had 200 miles on it and still had half of tank of gas," McDaniel said. It's also ecologically friendly. The smart fortwo, produced in France by smart, a subsidiary of Daimler-Benz AG, is painted with water-soluble paints.
You call that a knife? This is a knife
A GIANT Swiss army knife weighing almost 1.5kg and with 87 tools has gained a place in Guiness World Record for having the most functions on a penknife. The Wenger giant Swiss army knife has at least 115 uses, according to the company. The tools include Phillips and flat head screwdrivers, saws, scissors, rulers, universal wrench, laser pointer, cigar cutter, compass, can opener, golf club face cleaner, tyre tread gauge and of course, the toothpick. If you are thinking of making it a Christmas gift for the person with everything, it'll set you back about $1000. Share this article What is this? .
PSG power past Auxerre and into final
Paris Saint-Germain FC reached the French League Cup final at the expense of AJ Auxerre following a 3-2 win at the Parc des Princes. First-half headersPSG now have the chance to gain some silverware after enduring a disappointing season in which they lie 16th in Ligue 1, just three points clear of the relegation zone. A superb first-half display from Paul Le Guen's men was the key to victory. Mario Yepes opened the scoring with a header after 31 minutes and Pauleta struck with a similar effort 12 minutes later. Own goalAuxerre pulled one back with 16 minutes remaining as France goalkeeper Mickaël Landreau fumbled into his own net to concede an own goal. However, Bernard Mendy restored the two-goal lead five minutes later and a spectacular last minute bicycle-kick from Julien Quercia was nothing more than a consolation for Jean Fernandez's team.
'Runway's' fabulous accessory
Requests to talk to Garcia did not yield an interview, alas. The blog has been profitable, filled with ads, though ridiculously time-consuming and not profitable enough to quit their day jobs, they say. Plus, it's painfully seasonal. Major withdrawal ahead, as the show's finale is Feb. 27 and March 5. Designers Jillian, Christian, Chris and Rami are still in. T Lo, as they're collectively called, say they watch the show in their pajamas with wine and cheese and a couple of friends, on a vintage '60s daybed covered in brown velvet and a generous amount of pillows, in their cozy sloped-ceilinged third floor. They are online about 16 hours a day. They watch each episode six times. The morning after a show, with impatient e-mails pouring in ("C'mon boys, wake up!"), Lorenzo approaches Tom for their Project Rungay staff meeting.
