Peak-hour bike ban plan for trains sparks outcry

EXCLUSIVE: BIKES will be banned on all trains at peak hour from tomorrow, sparking an outcry from cyclists and public transport groups.

The new rule, hidden in a State Government document, has been posted on the Metlink website. The Government has not announced the rule despite its publication in the Victorian Fares and Ticketing Manual.

And the Herald Sun understands the city's private rail operator, Connex, has not been notified of the change.

The rule flies in the face of the Government's push for transport to be more environmentally sustainable.

Just last week VicRoads, the Government body responsible for the road network, urged motorists to get out of their cars and on to bikes to take the pressure off the city's freeways.

The new ticketing manual, effective from January 1, states "bicycles will not be permitted on services travelling through Zone 1 that; arrive in Melbourne between 7am and 9am and; depart Melbourne between 4pm and 7pm".

Production notes

In Dupree's case, though he begins cycling to get into shape, his aspiration to greatness is taken to the nth degree, adding yet one more item to help raise Carl's ire.

Joe Russo relates, "Dupree has this fascination with Lance, and the second half of the film where he starts to become motivated and look for a healer to motivate him...it turns into Lance Armstrong. Lance came in and did such a great cameo for us."

On the day that Lance Armstrong made his appearance at the San Pedro Harbor, the energy was palpable. When word spread that he had arrived, seasoned crewmembers-accustomed to working with the most famous of celebrities-stopped to stare. When he climbed on his bike in front of the blue screen to shoot a scene that would later translate into a surreal dream sequence, cast and crew alike gathered around like young kids to watch.

Monfort's outlook still sunny

Holliday is, after all, third in seniority among the Rockies and one of 16 products of the Rockies' minor league system that filled the playoff roster. He was a prospect who struggled but has blossomed on the big- league level to be considered an elite player by his peers and fans.

Individually, he is what the Rockies are as a team, a product of an organizational commitment that was questioned often during the five-year rebuilding plan that culminated with a World Series appearance.

There were times when fans demanded change, but the franchise didn't sway.

"I've been in the game long enough to know you have to do things because you believe, and your people believe, it is what should be done," Monfort said. "We bowed to the pressure from outside eight years ago (signing Mike Hampton and Denny Neagle).

Caltrans scuttles bike lane on Richmond-San Rafael Bridge

Transportation planners unveiled a $55 million plan Wednesday to create bicycle and pedestrian access on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, but there's a problem: those who operate the bridge want no part of it.

The California Department of Transportation says it's too dangerous.

A committee for the Bay Area Toll Authority - which funds day-to-day operations of Bay Area bridges - heard plans Wednesday morning in Oakland to create a bicycle and pedestrian path by installing a movable barrier on the upper deck of the span.

During nonpeak commute hours, the barrier would be moved into place to create an 8-foot-wide lane for bicyclists and pedestrians. Presently there are three lanes on the span, but only two are used for traffic. The third is an auxiliary lane. The plan was the result of the third study on the access issue; the first was done 10 years ago.

SC resurrects Bhagat Singh

She claimed that she was going back to Barnala on February 1 this year.

As she and her sister reached near the chowk to board a bus, Parminder Singh and one assistant sub-inspector (ASI) wrongfully picked them up. She stated to have been brought to Sadar police station, where the two were illegally detained for two days.

The head constable also demanded Rs 50,000 to release them. On the contrary, the cop started outraging the modesty of the complainant and her sister. Finally, the complainant agreed to pay Rs 30,000. Rupees 30,000 was arranged and it was paid to the cop and they were allowed to go.

Taking cognisance of the matter, the commission ordered an inquiry under Section 17(ii) of the Protection of Human Rights Act,1993. The investigation is entrusted to the ADGP of the Commission Jyoti Trehan.
